MUSKEGON July 31, 2015– At the July meeting of the West Michigan CLC, a name change was approved. The West Michigan CLC will now be known as the Lakeshore CLC. The Lakeshore CLC represents local unions in Muskegon, Ottawa, northern Allegan, Newaygo, Oceana, Lake, Mason and Manistee Counties.
The name change is part of an overall plan to merge smaller Central Labor Councils in west Michigan into a larger umbrella organization known as an Area Labor Council (ALC). The newly-formed West Michigan Area Labor Council currently comprises the Lakeshore CLC and the Kent-Ionia Labor Council.
Each CLC will remain an independent chapter of the West Michigan ALC. The merger between the Kent-Ionia Labor Council and the Lakeshore CLC into the West Michigan ALC took place earlier this year. More CLCs in west Michigan are expected to join the West Michigan ALC in the future.
Lakeshore CLC Chair Ryan Bennett (UA Local 174) said the name change from West Michigan CLC to Lakeshore CLC was necessary to avoid confusion and distinguish his chapter from the newly formed West Michigan ALC.
Also, as part of the merger into an Area Labor Council, each CLC chapter has transitioned from being known as a “Central Labor Council” to a “Community Labor Council.”
More information on the new West Michigan Area Labor Council will be posted in the coming months.
